Today’s Wednesday Wanderings is a reminder to slow down and admire the beauty that surrounds us. We are quickly approaching a very beautiful time of year – fall in Iowa. I say in Iowa, because I know some locations do not have the luxury of experiencing the changing colors like we do.
I absolutely love seeing the bright reds, oranges and yellows that come about this time of year (or maybe a little later on – seems a tad bit early). However, once the leaves start to change color… it isn’t long before they are gone. The trees become bare and the landscape turns to brown.
But don’t worry – we’re not quite there… yet.
Which means this is the perfect time to slow down and soak it all in. Today.
Right now, the leaves on the trees, the grass, and even the weeds are still mostly green. We go through the busyness of our days and take for granted some of the simplest reminders of how beautiful life is. As the snow melts and the grass starts to turn green each spring, we are all so excited (at least I am) to see this vivid color come to life. And then by June or so, we just go about our days and tend to be less excited about the greenness of the grass and leaves… and especially the weeds. We have to mow the lawn. The weeds grow tall enough to sometimes block our view. The leaves can sometimes keep the light from shining through.
And then comes fall. It is usually accompanied by this energy – people being excited for all things “fall”. Cooler weather. Brisk mornings. Football season. Coziness. Who doesn’t love throwing on jeans and a sweatshirt and then enjoying a cup of hot chocolate or apple cider during a bon fire? Or wearing a comfy sweater while getting an early morning coffee with friends. Well, maybe you’re not one to enjoy these things, but I am!
Before we know it, we find ourselves raking up the last of the brown, crunchy leaves. We put away the potted plants and patio furniture. We prepare for another winter. And on those cold winter days, we find ourselves longing to look out the window and see that brilliant green again. The same brilliance we so often take for granted all summer long.
So, while we still have the opportunity, I encourage you to take a break from what you’re doing. Step outside. Take a deep breath and soak it all in. And when the leaves block your view of the sunshine…
Simply adjust your position a little. Make one step in a different direction, and the light will be able to find its way through.
I think too many of us struggle with busyness. We feel like we are doing things right if we have a jam-packed schedule with all the right events. When really, we all need to take time to slow down. It’s always so great to talk and express ourselves, but it’s even more powerful to listen. Take some time to just be still. You will not regret it!
Happy Wanderings, friends! Keep looking up!
