Have you ever found yourself at a dead end?
Maybe you took a wrong turn while you were out on a drive. Or maybe you were trying out a new project you found on Pinterest, and it flopped. Maybe you made it to the final round of interviews for a new job, and then they tell you – although they think you’re really great – you didn’t get the position. Or maybe you were pursuing a new relationship and you realized it wasn’t going anywhere.
I think we’ve all felt like we hit a dead end at one time or another in our lives. They can truly feel like failure, but really… I think they can be beautiful if we have the right perspective.
If we see the sign that says DEAD END, it usually gives us a bad feeling. “Oh no, I better not head that way!”
Last night I passed a few of these signs as I was on an adventure to find great scenery shots. Then I came upon another dead end sign, and I had a nudge to head down the gravel road anyway.
That is when I stumbled upon this golden view:
If we hit a dead end and give up, we could miss out – on another path, project, relationship, job – whatever it might be.
Maybe we aren’t ready for the next destination yet, but we don’t have to give up. We can learn from the road we’re on, and look for beauty and joy right where we’re at.
Not every road we travel will be the perfect path – some will be smooth and lovely, but some WILL be bumpy and rough as we hit giant potholes.
I saw this inspiring message from Ann Voskamp this morning, and wanted to share:
Today’s multiple choice:
Busy is a choice.
Stress is a choice.
Joy is a choice.
So… even if we end up at a dead end, we can still look for the beauty as we slow down, worry less, and choose joy.
I found so much joy on my photo adventure last night! I started driving west on I-80, and found a new little slice of heaven made up of the Iowa countryside. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Iowa, you are lovely!
